Winona Nordic Timing

About:
We are a group of volunteers representing the Winona/Cotter High School Nordic Ski Team and we provide elite-level chip timing services to the greater Winona community at a substantially reduced price compared to commercial timing companies.  The goal is to make the high school program financially self-sustained.  Our timing system was acquired with a community grant from the BK5K organization.  Many thanks to the BK5K organization.

How chip timing works:
Passive and disposable RFID chip(s) are applied to a racer's bib and they respond to the timing system at the finish line recording the athlete's time.  This is the same technology as security systems by the doors at your local department store.  Mobile broadband permitting, preliminary finish times are uploaded to winonatiming.weebly.com for participants to check using their mobile devices within minutes of finishing.  Final results are minutes after the final finisher.

Cost starting Jan 1, 2025:
  • $300 for first 50 participants
  • $400 for 50-100 participants
  • $100 for every additional 100 athletes
(i.e. 90 participants is a $300 fee.  Compare this to a $1,100+ fee from a commercial race timing company)

Runners - Cost breakdown
0 to 50 - $300
50 to 100 - $400
101 to 200 - $500
201 to 300 - $600

...and so on

Vital Race Director information:
  1. You supply the bibs to Jason well prior to the race date
  2. Provide estimate of likely athletes.  Account for day-of registrants (if you permit them)
  3. Race registrant list must be in Microsoft Excel (.xls or .xlsx) or Google Sheets form with the following mandatory categories: last name, first name, gender, age, race division
  4. This timing system collects finish line data only.  Very important: racers must understand the race starts when the gun goes off
  5. Racers cannot alter their bibs in any way and bibs must be worn on outermost clothing over the lower stomach
  6. Electronic timing is more accurate than manual timing.  Thus, you may observe or hear about incremental differences between chip and watch times
